Art and Design

Purpose of Study

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. Our high-quality art and design education engages, inspires and challenges all of our students. All students come to us with their own ideas, skills and creativity. We equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own styles of art, craft and design. As students’ progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design reflect our nation, shape our history and contribute to our culture.

·        Enhancing creativity: Through the analysis of artists and designers and the creation of individual designs and final outcomes, students will experience different techniques, genres and artistic effects. Students’ confidence and level of skills will develop which will enhance their freedom of expression and creativity.

·        Increase problem solving strategies: A large focus of problem solving and refinement feature heavily within the art and design curriculum which will set students up well to think critically and to become expert problem solvers.

·        Promoting mental health & wellbeing: Experimenting with various art media will allow them to develop a variety of sensory experiences and allow students to feel calm and focused.  Producing art work can be very rewarding for students and gives a real sense of achievement and fulfilment.

·        Presenting and celebrating artwork: Our students will be able to confidently present their work to others and the concepts and meanings behind their work. We value student contribution to the school culture in using student designs for events and on our school certificates. We also hold various internal and external art competitions that are very popular amongst our students. We celebrate our student successes by showcasing artwork at various Arts Showcase events throughout the academic year.

Aims

The Oasis Academy Silvertown curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all students:

·        produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

·        become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

·        evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

·        know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

·        To form own opinions and be able to articulate the reasons for liking or disliking works of art in order to appreciate art.

Art and Design will enrich the lives of all of our students in whatever path they decide to take on in the future. For some, it will give them the ability to think creatively or to solve problems. for others, they may continue to embrace themselves in cultural experiences that they are able to link back to an art period or style. For some, they will continue to draw, paint or sculpt throughout their lives for work or for pleasure and will cultivate a skill that will remain for life.
