Construction milestone reached at our new permanent home

Our brand new home reached an important construction milestone recently, and we celebrated it!

Our brand-new secondary school building on North Woolwich Road in West Silvertown has reached an important step which was recently celebrated with a small ceremony last week.

Our state-of-the-art new permanent home codenamed the ‘superblock’ is currently being constructed on the former fire station 30 seconds from West Silvertown DLR Station and will be the new home of 600 students once complete and will feature a sport pitch and playing area on the roof, and a double height sports hall and main hall/performance area making up the core of the building inside.

Morgan Sindall was appointed to deliver the project, and work commenced on Oasis Academy Silvertown’s new home back in October 2020, their topping out ceremony on Friday marked its next important milestone. The academy is set to open its doors to the new build in half term, February 2022.

The new building’s design features folded external walls to create a layered effect and warm white brickwork will be used on the façade to complement the residential properties in the area - including the nearby Grade II listed Silo D, which dates to the 1920s.

Johanna Thompson, Principal at Oasis Academy Silvertown, commented on the progress saying; “My thanks goes to the team at Morgan Sindall for their continued hard work during the COVID pandemic to ensure our new home is on track and for arranging a great topping out ceremony where some of our students were able to see their new school for the first time.”

“We are very much looking forward to the enhanced facilities our permanent building will offer our students and the community, including excellent sports, music and arts facilities.”

The Ofsted graded ‘Good’ school with ‘Outstanding’ features has been at a temporary site in Rymill Street, North Woolwich since welcoming its first intake of students in 2014.

Richard Dobson, Area Director at Morgan Sindall, commented saying; “The topping out ceremony marks a celebration as the building is one step closer to opening and is very much on track to do so in February 2022.”

“Hundreds of people have been involved in the development of Oasis Academy Silvertown to make this project a success. Community is at the heart of the school’s design, with education and social spaces spread across different levels to create a holistic learning and development experience.”

“This promises to be a transformational investment for the West Silvertown community, which will provide hundreds of young people with a state-of-the-art learning centre.”

Arranged as a multi-storey ‘superblock’ on the former fire station site, the building design incorporates outdoor social space at different levels and a full-sized sports pitch on its roof.

John Murphy, Chief Executive Officer at Oasis Community Learning added; “We have been waiting many years for this state-of-the-art building to become a reality, and the topping out ceremony is very much a celebration of the work that has taken place to make this ‘superblock’ academy come to life. I know students & staff cannot wait to move in next year.”
